Sustainability fun in the classroom at Trinity Academy Bradford

Recently, I had the opportunity to run a series of mini-workshops at Trinity Academy Bradford, bringing the themes of sustainability and environmental responsibility directly into the classroom. These sessions focused on the vital topics of carbon footprint, travel choices, and sustainable transport planning – that are increasingly important for young people to understand as they shape the future.

What made these workshops particularly enjoyable was the hands-on approach. We transformed the classroom into a simulated model transport environment, allowing students to experiment with different travel scenarios and see the real-time impact of their decisions on carbon emissions. The energy in the room was palpable as pupils eagerly engaged with the models, testing out ideas and discussing the consequences of various transport choices.

To make the learning even more interactive, we incorporated activities like charades, where students acted out different modes of transport and sustainable practices. This not only encouraged participation but also sparked laughter and camaraderie, breaking down barriers and making the concepts memorable and accessible.

Thank you to RTC North for organising this event. It was inspiring to witness the genuine curiosity and creativity of the students as they explored solutions for a greener future. Their enthusiasm for hands-on learning and their thoughtful questions gave me great hope for the next generation of change-makers. I left Trinity Academy Bradford feeling uplifted and confident that, with such passionate young minds at the helm, our journey towards sustainability is well underway.

My Experience Judging the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Green Innovators Event

Following my rewarding experience at Trinity Academy, I had the absolute pleasure of serving as both an inspirational example and a judge at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Green Innovators event, held at Carleton Park School in Pontefract. Sponsored by Mayor Tracy Brabin, the event was a celebration of creativity and environmental passion among the next generation of leaders in our community.

It was truly uplifting to witness the enthusiasm and commitment of the pupils as they presented their innovative green ideas. Walking through their displays and listening to their pitches, I was struck not only by the depth of thought that had gone into each project, but also by the genuine determination to make a positive difference to our planet. It was great to see so many parents supporting the event and joining in the celebration.

As a judge, I found the task both inspiring and challenging – every entry was worthy in its own right. What stood out most was the collaborative spirit, with teams working together to tackle real-world environmental issues. The pride and excitement radiating from the pupils was infectious, and it left me feeling optimistic about the future of sustainability in West Yorkshire.

I am grateful to Mayor Tracy Brabin, Ahead Partnership and everyone involved in organising the event for inviting me to take part. It was a privilege to witness such innovative thinking and dedication to the environment at such a young age.

If these Green Innovators are anything to go by, the future of our region is in safe hands.
